Abstract:

Emerging needs…rapidly changing requirements…dynamic environments…ever-increasing connectivity… evolutionary and revolutionary technologies…individual and societal needs…budget crises… shrinking schedules. The practice and profession of systems engineering emerged from the development of large, stand-alone, single purpose systems. Today we face an ever-shifting landscape and operate across a wide range of size, cost, and product lifespans. As technologies advance and complexity grows, yesterday’s approaches alone will fall short of what we require. If we are to move beyond 20th century engineering, how must we adapt and transform? Drawing from Systems Engineering Vision 2035 and insights from around the world, we will discuss how systems engineering must evolve to engineer a better tomorrow.

David Long has spent over 30 years helping organizations increase their systems engineering proficiency while simultaneously working to advance the state of the art. David was the founder and president of Vitech where he led development of innovative, industry-leading methods and software to engineer next-generation systems. He co-authored A Primer for Model-Based Systems Engineering and frequently delivers keynotes, tutorials, and workshops around the world. An INCOSE Fellow and Expert Systems Engineering Professional, David was the 2014/2015 president of INCOSE. He is currently the president of Blue Holon, Inc.
